Common Stains and How to Remove Them
1. Wine
You’ve been looking forward to unwinding all day, but as you grab that glass of Cabernet Sauvignon it tips over onto your beautiful white rug and you’re left with a stain for sore eyes. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there before which is why we’ve got these handy tips to effortlessly clean your rug.
- Immediately blot the stain with a clean, damp cloth. Repeat this with multiple clean cloths until you’re unable to absorb any more liquid.
- Cover the entire stain with salt until you can’t see the red wine anymore. That’s right- we want you to get in there and as-salt the stain.
- The salt should be wet at this point. Wait about 20 minutes for the salt to dry out and absorb the stain.
- Vacuum up the salt and voila, the stain should have disappeared.
2. Permanent Marker
Although the name suggests otherwise, it is possible to remove permanent marker stains. We’ve got you covered with removing this stubborn stain from your wooden tables.
- Move fast. The longer the stain sits, the harder it will be to remove it.
- Soak a clean cloth with rubbing alcohol and begin to dab the permanent marker stain.
- Repeat until the entire stain has been lifted off the wooden table.
3. Black Mold
Black mold can quickly become a problem in the moist climate of a bathroom. Not only is it unsightly, but it’s also known to cause respiratory problems if not handled swiftly. Lucky for you, the black mold found in bathrooms is relatively easy to clean and completely manageable if you follow these steps.
- Mix one part bleach with two parts water and spray onto the infected area.
- Let the solution rest for at least 10 minutes. You should already start to notice the black mold peeling off the surface.
- If there is any remaining black mold, scrub it with a bristle brush.
- Thoroughly clean the area with water and let it air dry.
4. Crayon
We know you want your kids to chase their artistic dreams, but finding your wall covered with crayon marks probably isn’t what you had in mind. But let’s face it, mistakes are going to happen and you can’t always control what they do when you aren’t watching. With these tips, we may be able to help you avoid taking on a paint job.
- If you catch the stain fast enough, you may be able to just use soap and water to remove the stain.
- Rub the crayon markings firmly, but gently. You don’t want to remove any of the paint during this process.
- If the crayon stain has had time to set in and the first method didn’t work, move on to making a baking soda paste.
- Mix three parts baking soda to one part water.
- Apply directly on the crayon markings, rub the paste in gently, and then remove with a clean cloth and let it air dry.
5. Grease
Grease stains may seem more intimidating because of the deep black color, but there is truly a solution to every problem. The best part is that this simple solution requires common household products that you most likely already have in your pantry.
- Cover the grease stain with a generous amount of baking soda.
- Use a bristle brush to rub the baking soda into the stain.
- Leave the baking soda to sit for at least 15 minutes.
- Vacuum the baking soda off the stain. Most of the stain, if not all, should be removed at this point.
- Apply dish detergent to any remaining grease and rub it gently with a brush.
- Rinse the area with a clean and warm cloth and let it air dry.
